Happy New Year, Yarnside Gathering!

Today was Yarnside's New Year Open House. It was a day for folks to come in and knit and crochet, catch up with others, and meet new friends. It was a HUGE SUCCESS! The table was full, and I had to bring in extra chairs to accommodate people! I think we had fourteen people at the table at any time, and over two dozen throughout the day. It was a fantastic way to start the year.

One of the best parts was that some of the people who came in today were people who haven't been in in a long time. It was like seeing old friends (even though we aren't close). I was very happy to see the crowds and join in the revelry. I had baked my frosted cinnamon-ginger bar cookies, which were a big hit, and had cheese and crackers, chips, and Molly Ranchers (my homemade hard candy). The coffee pot was cooking and there was plenty of tea. It was fabulous!

I left feeling drained, but fulfilled. Many of the ladies wished me well on the race this weekend and that means a lot to me. They see me as a person - a friend - not just a shop owner. It makes me feel sad about the pending closure of the shop. I had truly hoped that the shop would carry on, but it looks as though that will not be the case. I feel in some ways that I am disappointing these ladies, who found a place where they feel welcomed. On the other hand, I also know that there are no emotions in business and we are leaving, my lease is up, I have no buyer, therefore I have no option. I cannot be driven by feelings. It is a difficult lesson, but I know what I must do.

So much for that

I think I am going to have to put Tawny on Valium every day I want to leave. Friday I went to the post office, got the oil changed, and went to the grocery store. I left the dogs at home and didn't have any problems with them. Today I went for a run and had problems. I just wanted to beat the crap out of that dog.

I suppose it could be worse. She could have damaged my stuff. And all I had to do was clean up. But I just don't get it. What caused her to snap? There was no rain or storms like there have been the past three days. She has over a dozen dog toys on the floor. How can she be good one day and not the next. I hate the idea of drugging her when I'm only going to be gone a half hour, but I cannot deal with the stress. I'm not going to do all my runs on the treadmill just so I don't have to leave her. What happens when I want to go to a friend's for dinner? I'm not taking her. One of these days I'm going to work where I can't bring her and she is going to be home all day every day. Will I have to drug her daily? Ugh. I guess we'll deal with that as it comes.

Second run of the year

No, I'm not going to count each run. Today's run was good. The weather was a little on the cool side, but mostly due to the 15 mph North winds. The temps were in the mid 40s but the sun was shining.

I tried to calibrate the footpod. It failed the first time and then calibrated the second time. I don't feel that I have a completely accurate record of today's run, but who cares? I got out there and did it. That's what matters.

I did 6.25 miles in 1:10:11 for a pace of 11:13 or so. My cadence averaged around 82.

The problem with the run was that I am lacking motivation all of a sudden. My first half marathon is in six days -- at Disney! -- and I am feeling like running is a chore. Like I don't want to do it. I wanted to stop after two miles and say, ah, I'll rest for the race. Then I said just do one more. And one more. It seemed like a job. I don't know if this is normal or if there's something wrong with me. I hope I'll get over it soon. Like I said, I only have six days.

New year, new look

Yeah, I decided to change the blog look. I hope you like it!

First run of the new year

So I planned to get up and run early this morning. I ended up sleeping in a little later than I had anticipated. Obviously I needed it. It was raining all morning so I decided to do a treadmill run. Mom and Dad gave me a footpod for the Garmin for Christmas, so I decided to give it a go on the treadmill. I need to calibrate it because it reported a significantly different speed and distance than the treadmill. It recommends calibrating on a track (specifically the inside lane) but since I don't have one of those handy, I will do a GPS calibration tomorrow, weather permitting.

Anyway, I did 2.5 miles on the treadmill at a speed of 6.0 mph. That's a 10:00 minute per mile pace. I watched a podcast while I did it, and it seemed to make the time go by a little better. Unfortunately I kept hitting the earphone cord with my hands and that was annoying.

Not a bad first run of the new year. If the weather is good, I'd like to do  my long run outside. It is a six-miler. It will be the last long run before the Half. I can't believe it is less than a week away!
