Yup! That's right! After three days off, I ran this morning. The weather was about as nice as it could get this time of year. It was 84 degrees at 6am, with a heat index of 91. The humidity was a "low" 74%, the skies were mostly cloudy, and there was a slight breeze. My goal today was to do a shorter run than last time, but at a faster pace.
By now I know my pace pretty well. It feels comfortable. What I wanted to accomplish this morning was to work harder than the comfortable pace for two laps. I have consistently slowed down with each lap, which isn't surprising. I wanted to not drop off and do the two laps in the same time. I think I was successful. What do you think?
Lap Distance Time Average Pace
1 1.15 12:10 10:37
2 1.15 11:22 9:52
Total 2.30 23:33 10:15
Do you see that?! I was FASTER on my SECOND lap! I broke the 10:00 pace for more than a mile! And it was the SECOND mile! I am really thrilled! This past Sunday I ran the two laps and my time was 25:20. Granted, I did have knee pain that day that prevented me from going faster. However, I think overall my pace has improved to somewhere around 10:45 (which is what I did the Firecracker 5k in). Now it looks like I can really work it down.
I did some browsing in the App Store yesterday and found the Bridge to 10k app. It is a six week training program to go from 5k to 10k. I have been considering it. However, it has been really hot and I don't know that I want to run for an hour during the August mornings. I may wait until September to start that, and in the meanwhile, work on getting my pace down. One of my fitness goals is to run a 5k in 28:00. That is a 9:00 pace. I still have a ways to go to get there, but this morning's run has given me the confidence that I may truly get there!
