Speed demon in development

I had so much fun the other day, and was so encouraged by my performance, that I decided to try another day of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone for 2 laps. The results? Let's just say "YIPPEE!"

Lap      Distance     Time   Average Pace
1            1.16           11:07      9:38
2            1.17           10:59      9:25
Total      2.32            22:07     9:31

Isn't that awesome?! I am really thrilled! Bill suggested that next time I only run one lap and see how fast I can do it. I may try that. I am also leaning towards the Bridge to 10k program more and more.

While on errands today I dropped by Razor's Edge. I was wondering how many more foundations classes I have left. Apparently I'm done and ready to start like a regular person. That is encouraging. In other news, Julie mentioned that as of next week she's going to part-time and next month she's moving out of the area. Hmm.

I had sort of made up my mind that I was going to concentrate on running for now and do a little crossfit on the side. Meaning that I can do rowing, squats, pushups, pullups, dumbbells, and so on at the base gym. She was my hurdle. She's fine as a person, and I appreciate her dedication to the sport, but her style of motivation was not doing for me. In fact it was de-motivating. So I may continue to think about the next level of fitness for me. I was having a hard time balancing doing both.

I went to the doctor today to see what is going on with my jaw. It has been bothering me now for about two weeks. To the point where talking and eating are painful. I can't sleep, because the pressure of my cheek on the pillow hurts and sleeping on my back is fine except when my jaw relaxes and opens. Anyway, I had enough and called for an appointment. I was lucky enough to get a same day.

I got to see Dr. Griffen, my PCM, which is unusual for a same-day appointment. He thinks the problem is in the TMJ, so he gave me some meds to ease the pain and recommended I see my dentist. Thankfully it appears I am not afflicted with any of the other problems that manifest themselves in jaw pain, such as swollen lymph nodes, salivary gland tumors, ear problems, tonsil problems, or infected teeth. However, he recommended I see my dentist, as they are more specialized in this area. My appointment is Thursday morning.

He put me on Darvocet, a narcotic, because I can't take NSAIDs. Granted this won't help with any inflammation, but it's the best we can do. There was a note in my chart that said I was allergic to Darvocet, but to the best of my memory I've never had it, and to the best of my knowledge it is not related to Aleve. He looked back through my history and could not find any instance where I had been prescribed it, so we went forward. I took it when I got home. The pain has eased a little, and I'm kind of sleepy, but no adverse reactions so far.

I had to thank Dr. Griffen today. He is the one who really pushed me out the door and into an exercise regimen. I've always been pretty healthy, with good blood pressure, cholesterol, and all that. When he met with me to discuss my labs a few months ago, he said my cholesterol was a little high at 209. I don't think it has ever been that high. His suggestion was to exercise. Which I knew. So that was my kick in the pants to get started.

I don't know what my cholesterol is today, but my blood pressure was 115/58 and my resting heart rate was 55. I don't remember seeing those levels in a long time. The scale was my friend today, too, registering a 7# loss since March. I can see a difference in my body since exercising, and it was great to see medical proof, too.

Dr. Griffen was pretty excited that someone finally listened to his advice and started exercising! He was impressed by my progress and I had to brag about this morning, and he seemed genuinely impressed. He said that the C25k program sounds like what his wife has been looking for, so I gave him the info. I hope that she starts it. I can't say enough good things about that program!

Well, it's off to make some nut burgers for dinner. I've been looking forward to them all day. I hope they'll be soft enough to eat!
