Today (Saturday) was a drive day. We left Fort Collins around 11am, later than we had originally intended. We drove north into Wyoming (a new state for the dogs, cats, and me) and then on into South Dakota (another new state for five of us). We ended in Spearfish, SD at Chris' Campground, a relatively nice RV park.
We saw so many motorcycles on the drive. They were all heading south as we were going north. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was this week and I guess folks are heading back home. I think I've seem more motorcycles today than I have seen in my whole life! Apparently this rally is huge. The guy at the RV park office said that there are between 700,000 and 1,000,000 people in attendance. It doubles or more the population of the state! Wow!
We started the trip with Marco swaddled in a towel a la a burrito. He seemed content and stayed there until we were through Cheyenne (about an hour). Then he wriggled his way out and went in the back seat. I thought that he'd be OK. Nope. It wasn't even five minutes before he pooped. He made it through the rest of the trip without incident. We are going to have to figure out what to do. I am not going to deal with poop every day!
We got to Torrington, Wyoming, and needed to stop for diesel. The first place we pulled in was closed. At 1pm on a Saturday. The second station had people at the pumps, but we didn't see a diesel pump. The third station in town (of three) was also closed, but we were able to get the pump to take our card. I was getting a little worried since we were close to empty. I suppose we could have gone another 50 or 60 miles. Once we got back on the road we saw a sign that said "Next Services 81 miles". It's a good thing we were able to fill up! How crazy is it that two of the three gas stations were closed in the middle of the day on a Saturday. With all the motorcyclists they could have made a mint!
Wyoming was scenic in an open-spaces kind of way. Once we crossed the line into South Dakota the scenery changed instantly to the Blackhills Forest, where there were billions of trees and cliff faces everywhere. It was a very stark contrast to the Wyoming scenery and interesting to me that it happened right at the state line.
We are now planning tomorrow's adventure. If we do what we want to do, we'll be doing a lot of driving. We may opt to stay an extra day here.
Mileage for the day = 322
Total mileage = 2073
