Day Twenty-three of the big move west

Thursday we stayed put and took a drive around Yellowstone National Park. There is way too much to see in the short amount of time we had, but we did our best. We drove down to Old Faithful, checking out a few sights along the way.

We got there about an hour or so before its next predicted eruption time, so we went to the restaurant and had lunch. The food was surprisingly good. Then we went outside and tried to find seating around the geyser. We got good spots and hung out and waiting. It spurted for a bit and the crowd got excited. We heard a few people ask "Is that it?". Then it went crazy!

It was pretty neat to watch, and impressive that it is so (relatively) predictable.

From there we headed back towards the campground and stopped at the Grand Prismatic Spring. That was really neat! There were so many different colors to be seen, the picture just can't show how awesome it was.

Among others, we saw Gibbon Falls, an elk with her three babies lounging next to the river, and a whole herd of elk in the town. There must have been three or four dozen of them, just lounging in the grass between the roads. That was pretty awesome!

It gets better! We were just finishing up dinner, when we heard that some elk had come into the campground. We were able to get pretty close to them. Carefully, of course. This one posed for Bill!

That's with no zoom! Then we went up the hill across the street from the campground and took a picture. It was a really pretty campground.

Oh yes, there were more s'mores and outdoor cooking that night.
