Today was a tough swim lesson. Well, they all have been tough, but today we did a lot of drills. Coach asked me what I wanted to do today and I said that I wanted to work on my stroke. Well, we did, and I think I made huge improvements.
We started with a 50m freestyle warmup. Then we did side glides, pause drills, zipper drills, fist drills, one arm drills, and a few others I can't remember at the moment. I tried to focus on everything, but Coach told me that I just need to focus on one aspect of the stroke with each drill. For example, I shouldn't think about keeping my head down when I am doing the one arm drill, because that drill is specifically to focus on hand entry. So I should concentrate on what the drill is working one. The rest will come in time.
He makes it sound so easy.
But I could tell that my stroke improved from the warm up laps to the cool down laps. Now I just need to continue to do what I was doing at the end today. There is a lot to think about. It is tough. But I know I am about 35 years behind my peers in swimming, so I don't anticipate fixing this overnight. I know that if I work on it, I'll improve. The important part is that I am out there trying. The next most important part is that I am having fun. And surprisingly I am. I now look forward to my swim sessions! Crazy!
