Had a great run tonight! Ron (aka "Finger") and I have been chatting from time to time on facebook and last Tuesday he posted that he had run. I told him that he should have waited and joined me at McGuire's. So he said he would this time and that he'd run with me.
Well he was true to his word. He saw me and gave me a big slimey sweaty hug and said he had just run 5 miles and was ready to go. We took it a little faster than I would have liked, but it was still a good pace. I had to struggle a little to keep a conversation going, but it was good. Towards the end my posture kind of sagged and Ron gently pointed it out. He said I'd get more tired because I was using my upper body more.
In any case, Ron, Chris, and I ran together. Chris got a little ahead in the last quarter mile, but Ron stayed with me. I'm sure it was a nice gentle cool down for him, but he never complained we were going too slowly.
I mentioned that Coach Mark has stopped telling me to take this run slowly and instead the workout note is "Have fun!" I said that I appreciated that because that is important to me. Training is important and I want to improve my running, but not at the expense of enjoying myself. If I stop having fun, I am going to not want to do this anymore. Yes, I want to improve and I know I need to work at it, but if it is all work and no fun, it isn't worth doing it anymore. I really look forward to Tuesday nights. I'm a little sad that I will probably not do too many more of them. I don't want to run in 100 degree temps. Chris and Jackie are going to stop doing them because they want to do Bands on the Beach on Tuesday nights. Jen hates running in the heat. I won't have friends there to run with. Anyway, I'll take that one week at a time.
Tonight's run was 3.16 miles in 29:45 for an average pace of 9:25. Splits were 9:46, 9:13, 9:23, 1:22 (=8:39 pace). Not bad at all!
